IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE BROTHERS OF SACRED HEART INSTITUTIONS IN HAITI

Since Tuesday January 12, 2010, the College Canado-Haitien & Frères du Sacré-Coeur Alumni Association, Inc. (CCH-FSCAA) has been deeply concerned and painfully affected by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck its homeland of Haiti - and its resulting aftermath.

An excessive number of lives was lost, properties were destroyed and the states of mind of many are currently in disarray. The association expresses its deepest sympathies to the victims and their families and assure them of its solidarity.

Brothers of Sacred-Heart institutions located in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince such as Pope John XXIII School on Harry Truman Boulevard, Juvenat College in Mariani, the St. John the Evangelist School in Turgeau, the Canado-Haitian Secondary School in Turgeau, the Canado Technical School also in Turgeau, the Brother Polycarpe Novitiate in Thor and the Brothers of Sacred Heart Administrative Headquarters in Pacot were severely damaged and obviously, urgent needs have emerged.

In the past years, the CCH-FSCAA has been involved in facilitating several students in their educational path. Now, it finds such action even more imperative in light of this recent succession of events that have adversely affected their lives. The association, therefore, is in dire need of your contributions in order to help make the process more efficient and timely. On one hand, the money collected will be assigned to assist individual students and teachers in difficulty; on the other hand, it will be allocated to orchestrate preliminary repairs to the damaged buildings. The association will utilize the same avenue it has been utilizing on a yearly basis in order to provide funds to the schools. The amount directed at helping the students and teachers will be handed directly to individual schools and the amount allocated to repair the buildings will be passed on to the Brothers of Sacred Heart Administrative Headquarters.

The association wants to collect at least $100,000 US in order to cover as many people and situations as possible.
Please send your tax deductible checks or money orders payable to:

Fifth Annual CCH-FSCAA Gala
A clinical perspective by Harry Comeau, LMSW (Class of 1975)

Tradition is defined as a set of customs and practices.  Looking back at the 2008 performance at the Hilton Hotel, it was a given that the fifth gala would establish CCH-FSCAA fund raising as a must attend event where elegant revelers, fine cuisine, good wine, moving music will intermingle to create an unforgettable moment.  How is it possible to establish in just half a decade such a practice?  The following deconstruction will clarify the aforementioned premise.  Insofar, that a determined group of individuals well anchored in their respective communities and with common goals to develop their mental and spiritual sensitivity remain focused in their quest to uplift students in needs, failure will never be an option.

A clinical approach to this success requires ruling out the following flaws found in many organizations:

1-Unwillingness to accept the majority decision
2- Lack of initiative
3- Uncompromising ego

1- The perfect example to the first weakness centers on the musical band selection.  After several debates, it appears that the gala was doomed to failure on the assumption that PNP was not well known in the New York Metropolitan area.  Reaching out to our friends seems to confirm there was insufficient traction to meet our objective for a well attended party.  Once this matter was settled, the Board members went to work by diligently contacting alumni, relatives and previous attendees.

PNP played beautifully throughout the time delegated for our “stepping enjoyment” and at the end basically brought the crowd to ecstasy by an extraordinary play of the Skah Shah hit “Haiti” of the mid seventies.

2- Facing obstacles is a natural and regular occurrence for most organizations.  Being creative is the proper course of action to counter any lack of initiative.  CCH-FSCAA members contacted prospective attendees individually and spent hours together to follow-up on their initial attempts. The strategy was simple: keep track of progress and analyze trends to reach the best outcome.

3- From the president, the Board members, the advisors and the special advisors it is human nature to allow the ego to surface and sometimes at the most inopportune time.  A clear appreciation of taming such emotion was clearly put in evidence by Florence Bonhomme Comeau in her acceptance speech when she conveyed to the audience that “I love you guys for your maturity and all that you do for the children of Haiti”.

So was born and goes on the tradition for the CCH-FSCAA spring gala.

Intergenerational Solidarity - an alumnus perspective

By Harry Comeau, LMSW (Class of 1975)

June 3, 2008

What: The 4th Annual Fund-Raising Event held by Collège Canado-Haitien et Frères du Sacré-Coeur Alumni Association (CCH-FSCAA.ORG)

Where: Hilton Hotel, Melville, NY

When:  May 31, 2008

Expectations: Four hundred attendees to meet CCH-FSCAA’s goals of supporting students and teachers of the Collège Canado-Haitien and other schools in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

At a time when gas prices are running high and affecting food prices and travel costs, there were some concerns about our annual fund-raiser.  A week before the event, at a meeting held in Rosedale, NY, the reports submitted by board members indicated that we were just above 50% of our goals as evidenced by tickets sold and just over 75% by pledged attendees.

The program entails a musical performance by Tabou Combo, one of the leading Haitian live bands, which incidentally is in its fortieth year of promoting Haitian music at the international level and presentation of awards to four alumni: Dr. Jean “Jeanjean” Desse (Volleyball, Soccer, Table Tennis), Gerald “Gerry” Jean (Soccer), Marie-Yves Labbe Léger (Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball) and Charles “Ponpon” Vorbe (Soccer, Table Tennis).

The alumni, friends and supporters of this noble cause made this evening one of the most unforgettable events in the Diaspora.  By several accounts, the final report is still being worked on by CCH-FSCAA. There were close to 500 people at the $100.00 a plate party.  As an observer at the entrance of the Grand Ballroom, I noticed about 100 people coming in as late at 1:30am.

The ambiance in the dancing area, at the tables as well as near the cash bar and in the hallways was remarkable.  I witnessed one of the memorable encounters of two of my friends: René “Tito” St-Léger of Montreal and Patrick Cuvilly of Long Island who had not seen each other since 1971.  I am quite sure there were countless other meetings of former Canado and Frères du Sacré-Coeur students who have not seen each other for decades.  There were also several members of different organizations from New York, New Jersey and Canada who came to bring their support.  Wine and food were excellent and we registered no complaints on this issue.

The Tabou Combo musicians had one of their greatest performances.  The band played some of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s tunes to the delight of the attendees, young and in their prime. The most significant moment was when Tabou performed the song Haiti Chérie. Almost spontaneously all the guests picked up a small Haitian flag that was initially placed on every chair to commemorate Haiti’s Flag Awareness Month and they started to wave it in unison.  Roger “Shoubou” Eugene, the lead vocalist, acknowledged that he understood “tonight only” the real meaning of the lyrics and rhythm of this song that he wrote many years ago as he witnessed its impact on the revelers and himself at the sight of more than 500 Haitian flags held high in a repeated sweeping movement.

gala2008-flags

At the closing of the party around 3:00 am, there were more than 200 people on the dancing floor, remarkable evidence of an enjoyable fete.

The awards presentation marks a dramatic positive turn in the Haitian culture whereas only those who have passed away are recognized for their accomplishments.  This time the alumni, all for their skills in Sports during the 70’s, received a commemorative plaque: Gerald Jean from New York, Charles “Ponpon” Vorbe from Haiti, Marie-Yves L. Léger from Arizona and Dr. Jean Desse from Louisiana.

CCH-FSCAA is looking forward to another memorable event for their 5th Annual Fund- Raising next May 2009 and takes this opportunity to thank each and everyone: administrators, bankers, doctors, editors, educators, engineers, financiers, lead insurance agents, lawyers, musicians, physical therapists, physicians, professors, researchers, social scientists, students, teachers, nurses, technicians, translators, women activists, and all other professionals for their support to the students and teachers of the Collège Canado-Haitien.

About the CCH-FSCAA 3rd Annual
Fund-Raising Gala
May 26th, 2007

By Ronald César
(Class of 1974)

The night was lovely and beautiful.
Everything was set and the board members were right on schedule. The cocktail party started around 9:00PM during which time Marc Mathelier, well known solo artist (guitar), dug deeply into his repertoire of wonderful songs from our folklore to entertain a very attractive audience. The rhythm was so characteristic of our culture that it brought back memories of our beloved Haiti.

The second part of the evening, which took place in the Grand Ballroom, was marked by the traditional speech given by the president of the association Dr. Karl Dormesy. He was eloquent as always and emphatically reiterated the mission of CCH-FSCAA. He seized the moment to extend our sincere thanks to the guests. Furthermore, he stressed the urge for new members to join us in this great venture.

Next our Master of Ceremony Mr. Gerald Jean introduced El Grupo Claveson of New York, a cuban orchestra. Under the lead of their maestro Jose Scringer, those musicians gave us a taste of Guaracha, Son Montuno and particularly Afro-Cuban Music. To the older folks in the audience, it was reminiscent of the Sonora Matancera, Celio Gonzalez, Orquesta Aragon, Benvenido Granda and the Celia Cruz era. It is also worth mentioning that their lead guitarist (Tres Player) is Jude Duverger, a Haitian musician who excels in that arena.

The main attraction of the evening was the introduction, in New York for the first, time, of the group from Miami, Florida: Lucky & Friends. This trio kept the audience involved for two wonderful hours with the Compas rhythm. The dance floor's real estate proved to be in very high demand at that moment in time. The musicians expressed their heartfelt thanks and gratitude for this great opportunity and hoped to be selected again in the future. Mr. Kerby Baton, the bass player, is a Canado-Haitien alumnus who has strongly embraced the goals of the association. In addition, special thanks to sound engineer Mr. Gerald Desir (former Shupa-Shupa and Shleu-Shleu drum player) for his professionalism in providing a very clear sound system

The audience was quite mixed with people of various nationalities and from different ethnic backgrounds. They did express their utmost satisfaction. Several stated emphatically how noble they feel our mission is and are willing to help us via fund-raising in their communities. This way we'll be able to reach more children in Haiti. In the end, everyone finds him/herself anxiously awaiting the next Gala 2008.

Annual Fund-Raising Festive Evening of the AAFSCCCH
(Association des Anciens des Frères du Sacré-Cœur et du Collège Canado-Haïtien - CANADA)

A real privilege it was, indeed. We are referring to the opportunity to have been in attendance of the annual alumni fund-raising event organized by our CCH-FSCAA fellow alumni residing in Canada – the AAFSCCCH. What a treat for those of us who had a chance to be there! Originality and good taste continue to be what characterizes a Canado-sponsored event anywhere. In the most pleasant environment of the Centre des Loisirs de la ville St-Laurent, the presentations were thought-provoking, informative and entertaining as well. It was all in the spirit of making a positive difference in the lives of those, back in Haiti, who need some assistance finding a path to a better future through Education. Virtually all presenters and performers were Canado/Sacred Heart alumni. These very talented individuals included luminaries such as:

Eddy Garnier, the master of ceremonies for the occasion, animated the event with great dexterity. A College Canado alumnus residing in Canada, Eddy operates at the highest level of his profession. He is an internationally known poet, writer, speaker, journalist, storyteller, novelist who also shared with us one of his narrative masterpieces that evening while emceeing. Eddy’s work comes in the form of several published books and a CD. He is currently the vice-president of the literary entity "l'Association des auteures et auteurs de l'Ontario français (AAOF )". Moreover, Eddy is very much involved in the Haitian community of his adopted country.

dufour-cCarmin Dufour, calm, collected and outspoken, he was the featured voice on the microphone that evening for the hosting Canadian CCH-FSCAA chapter. He welcomed and thanked the audience for its participation. He reiterated the purpose of the association and its aim to network and be part of the solution for the less fortunate. The Canadian chapter’s leadership also includes the president Hébert St-Dic, the vice-president Attorney René St-Léger, the treasurer Dr. Félix Duval, the enthusiastic and talented photographer/videographer Yves Debrosse and others. Their hard and smart team work culminated to the great success the event was.

The special honoree Dr. Gérard Campfort, because of circumstances beyond his control, was not able to make the trip from Florida this time. But he promised to catch up with us in the near future and we are looking forward to that with great anticipation. However, the professor thoughtfully sent us poems from the two sets he authored: Eaux (1967) and Clés (1970). Five of these poems were brilliantly read to us by Numa Innocent, a literary icon in Montreal. The feeling that Numa injected into his delivery with his baritone voice and his appropriately placed intonations did only justice to Dr. Campfort’s remarkable work. Dr. Campfort was born in Port-au-Prince in January 1942. He has taught in several public and private institutions in Haiti including the Canado-Haitian College. Poet, philosopher and radio personality residing in Miami, Florida, he is also the coordinator for the Fort Lauderdale Municipal Library's cultural programs (Broward County Main Library). Prof. Campfort earned his third cycle doctorate in Philosophy at the prestigious Sorbonne University in France.

Dany Laferrière’s role in the mix was a very special one. In his unique style, he introduced Prof. Campfort in absentia to the audience. He went on to speak about Gérard Campfort, the man, the poet, the philosopher, his character, his versatility and everything else he is about and stands for. Dany, himself, is a brilliant and well-liked award-winning writer, filmmaker and journalist in his own rights. The very popular Dany has several books to his credit and figures prominently also in the Canadian literary circle. A full-featured movie was based on one of his novels. Dany is a Canado-Haitian College alumnus and shuttles between Miami and Montreal.

Stanley Colimon (author, composer, interpreter and guitarist) – Armed with his voice, guitar and unadulterated talent, he managed to captivate the audience with a few songs of his that, we must say, were all masterfully put together. The thought-provoking lyrics in his melodies hit every note of the human emotion - from the sad to the hilarious. One of the most memorable highlights of the evening was Stanley’s impromptu duet performance with Carmin Dufour’s 18 year-old daughter Carmine in an interpretation of Dis-Moi Je T’aime. Stanley has produced a CD with beautiful melodies and profound lyrics covering a variety of styles. The Repeat Mode incorporated in most CD devices must have been implemented with this kind of delivery in mind, particularly in the emotion-filled Lakou Foumi. Stanley is a Canado alumnus residing in Canada. He is also a Computer Sciences Instructor at the Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe.

Charlot Lucien, poet, artist painter, master storyteller, illustrator, caricaturist, is the founder and co-director of the Haitian Artists Assembly of Massachusetts. He is also a proud alumnus of Canado-Haitian College and resides in Boston, MA. He started his presentation by giving a rendition of one of Prof. Wesner Emmanuel’s funniest interactive moments with the students during his tenure as a teacher. He also exposed and commented about the caricatures he brought along with him. Later, He was re-introduced to the podium by his proud 9 year-old daughter Malaïka. Thereafter, by special requests, he performed in one of his outstanding narrative creations Ti Cyprien. Charlot's work includes two successful storytelling CDs (Ti Cyprien and Ti Oma) and three volumes of caricatures. He paid homage to the legendary Maurice Sixto of whom he is a great admirer. Charlot has picked up and mastered the Sixto genre brilliantly. There is no doubt that Maurice must be smiling peacefully in Heaven.

dormesy-kDr. Karl Dormésy, president of the New York chapter of CCH-FSCAA spoke about the solidarity and the teamspirit that exist between the Canadian and the New York chapters and the necessity to maintain this high level of fraternity and unity as much as possible. He briefly touched the history of the New York association and its current legal status as a non-profit organization. He mentioned the tremendous progress on the scholarships issue. Six scholarships were agreed upon by the board. They are to be awarded this coming September for the new Canado academic year. The awards will cover both the classical and the technical sections. Also, works are underway to further include all Sacred Heart institutions in Haiti and other schools as well, in the near future.

Dr. Dormésy - who was accompanied by his wife Carlette and daughter Stephanie - led the CCH-FSCAA contingent from New York. The board members, who crossed the Canadian border with him, were Dr. Jean-Marie Desrosiers, Mario Deller, Harry Bloncourt, Jean-Claude Bailey, Garry Raphaël, Ronald César and Dr. Willy Alexis.

Ney Bélancourt, out of Florida, spoke about the dream project to group all similar associations, from all sources, in a single mega event – a Conference on Education reuniting all of us working toward that same objective. Of course, the soiree would not have been complete without Ney’s hilarious improvisations that never fail to brighten a room with good humor.

Toward the end, the deejayed Haitian musics played were meticulously selected. Some of them created nostalgic feelings of fond times gone by. The dancing part, although abbreviated under the prevailing circumstances, was quite a happy and classy "suye pye" session.

The CCH-FSCAA of Canada or AAFSCCCH extends its warmest thanks to:

  • The ladies whose quality support in the background and the foreground allowed the whole process to develop flawlessly. That was true during the initial half hour cocktail segment through the conclusion of the event. We are referring to the following ladies: Marie-France Dufour, Marie-Lourdes Pierre, Chantal Justin, Michelle Legros, Brunette Clergé, Kenia Cayemitte and Maguy Mettelus. The Haitian food, as usual, was tastefully displayed and tastefully ingested by the lucky attendees.

  • The volunteering alumni at the door, at the bar and the sound engineers. Ronel Rocher, Joseph Louis and all those gentlemen were very courteous and efficient throughout the evening.

  • The family members and friends of alumni who wholeheartedly came out to support this initiative.

  • The new Canada-based alumni who plugged to the association for the first time. Among them we noticed - just to name a few - Frank Bloncourt, Wilner Morisseau etc. All these gentlemen took the engagement to stay close and lend their support to the efforts being deployed by the CCH-FSCAA in Canada.

  • Last but not least, Eddy Garnier, Numa Innocent, Dany Laferrière, Stanley Colimon and Charlot Lucien for their spirited artistic/intellectual contribution to this noble cause which is nothing less than the strong support and enhancement of quality education in Haiti.

Petit Séminaire Collège St-Martial
New York Event
July 30, 2005

By Dr. Karl Dormésy
(Class of 1973)

The "Soirée de Retrouvailles / Fundraising / Dinner Dance" of the Petit Séminaire Collège St. Martial Alumni Association Abroad, Inc. (PSCSM-AAA) took place on July 30th, 2005 at Mireille's Restaurant & Catering, located in Westbury, Long Island, NY.

Responding to the invitation of the PSCSM-AAA board of directors, seven board members of the Collège Canado-Haitien & Frères du Sacré-Coeur Alumni Association, Inc. (CCH-FSCAA) attended the annual event to express their support and solidarity to their counterparts. The CCH-FSCAA board members present were: Karl Dormésy, Gérald Jean, Ronald César, Mario Charles, Willy Alexis, Jean-Marie Desrosiers and Ney Bélancourt. It is worth mentioning that Ney traveled all the way from Haiti for such a special occasion.

After casual talks during the cocktail hour, the master of ceremony Mr. Lesly Samedy invited the CCH-FSCAA board members to the table specially reserved for that group. During his opening remarks, he thanked us for coming, introduced us to the audience which responded with warm applause. The president of the PSCSM-AAA, Mr. Pépin Accilien, gratefully acknowledged our presence during his speech and also was thankful. The master of ceremony went on to talk about their alma mater, teachers and alumni entertaining the audience with fond memories.

PSCSM-AAA had the good fortune to invite Ney Bélancourt to take the microphone and share his own memories of the Petit Séminaire Collège St. Martial. Ney who happens to be an alumnus of both the Petit Séminaire and the Canado schools, brought along with him two of his report cards from "classes de 6ème & 4ème" (6th and 4th grades, secondary school level). This was vintage Ney Bélancourt – you can never predict the next funny thing he is going to come up with. With great eloquence and humor, he kept everyone on the edge of his/her seat as he talks about his report cards, the curriculum, the behavior of the Brothers & Sisters of the institution. Everyone got a good dose of laughter. Ney's appearance was one of the major highlights in the evening. Following him, an invitation was extended to Karl Dormésy, CCH-FSCAA’s president in order to introduce and expose the purpose of his association to the audience. He did so shifting gear to a more serious note without stepping into Ney's shoe. Dinner, dance, acquaintances, reminiscence followed until 2:00 o’clock in the morning.

This was a fun, successful event and an extraordinary example of solidarity between two alumni associations with common goals and mission. The quality of the education has no boundaries within a single institution. Our aim is to inspire and support the Haitian student, the Haitian family and to a broader sense the country of Haiti itself.

Quick Report on The Fund-Raising Gala 2005

The first Fund-Raising Gala, organized by the CCH-FSCAA on May 28th, 2005 in Westbury, NY, turned out to be a complete success as planned and expected. Every element in the program contributed to that outcome:

The ambiance at Mireille's Restaurant from the cocktail hour to the end of the soiree, was the most pleasant. The Haitian cuisine was exquisite.

The president of the association Dr. Karl Dormésy made his welcoming speech. His talk included updates of the association's status and activities. He thanked the guests for their outpouring of support.

The audience, composed of alumni, friends and family members, the best crowd you can wish for in such an occasion, conducted itself accordingly.

The anticipated "retrouvailles" were uniquely special and warm. Old friendships - some of them, for a long time, diluted by time and space - were re-energized.

The System Band's musicians, led by their maestro Mr. Isnard Douby, were extremely enthusiastic and outdid themselves in their performance. The music was electrifying.

The animators of the evening did an outstanding job keeping the transitions flawless from one presentation to the next. They were: Mr. Gérald Jean, master of ceremony,
VP Mr. Ronald César, Mr. Roby Jeudy, Mr. Mario Deller and Dr. Jean-Marie Desrosiers.

Dr. Félix Duval from the CCH-FSCAA chapter in Canada spoke about the activities and the state of affairs up North.

The honorees received their plaques and expressed their appreciation. The eloquent Professor Wesner Emmanuel captivated the audience quite well with his delivery that went from serious to plain entertaining. The very articulate Mr. Ney Bélancourt did not disappoint. He also displayed that original sense of humor guaranteed to generate from a pleasant smile to a hearty laugh. Brother Jean-Jacques Legris, S.C. who currently resides in Canada had not been able to make the trip here as anticipated. However, our fellow alumnus Mr. René St-Léger, an attorney, from Canada also, received Brother Legris' plaque on his behalf and will make sure he gets it. Lastly, the directors introduced their own surprise honoree from the board in New York Mr. Jean-Claude Bailey. Inscribed on the plaque awarded to him is the following: "In Recognition of Your Dedication, Perseverance and Resourcefulness, the CCH-FSCAA is Pleased to Honor and Acknowledge Your Tireless Efforts and Contribution toward Making the Association a Success."

To all of you who responded to this event in one form or another:
We appreciate your contribution to this cause and extend our sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks.
Also we extend our special thanks to our sponsor for the event
