Canado-Haitian College
By Prof. Wesner Emmanuel
Canado-Haitian
College: a model of cooperation - Canadian-Haitian
cooperation merging vision and efficacy, opening
the doors of new horizons to the youth striving
to construct a viable life itinerary for himself
or herself.
In 1969, the Canado-Haitian College
was created and named as such while integrating, for
the most part, the secondary school students attending
Pope John XVIII School in the Bi-Centenaire area of
Port-au-Prince. All was managed by the Brothers of
the Sacred Heart. Also, it appealed to and attracted
into the mold several students from The Petit Séminaire
Collège Saint
Martial, the Saint-Louis de Gonzague School and other
schools. Canado introduced itself on the Education
scene with three major vehicles designed specifically
to carry the student toward a bachelorship in Literature
or Sciences and a bachelorship in Mathematics. They
were presented as follows:
An Academic option comprising Literature, Sciences
and Mathematics.
A Technical option comprising Electricity, Automobile
Repair, Electronics, Refrigeration, Machine Shop (Mécanique Ajustage), etc.
A Commercial option comprising Accounting, Office Management,
etc.
This was the harbinger for revival in an educational
system entrenched in aged programs that, a long time
ago, were designed towards the liberal professions and,
the latter themselves had had reached the level of saturation.
From the outset, Canado revealed itself
as a school geared toward progress,
preparing the young students facing life according
to the prevailing demands in the job market - thus,
following the concept of great initiators such as:
Brother Gilles Charlebois, S.C. (Brother Richard) for the
erection of the buildings with the support of the Canadian
cooperation.
Brother Jean-Jacques Legris, S.C. for the establishment of
the curriculum featuring new materials including the
following:
1 - ISP (Introduction to Physical Sciences) with organized
and well maintained laboratory.
2 - Introduction to Technology.
3 - Choice of careers.
4 - Language laboratory.
For the formation of the mind, the heart, the hands,
Arts, Music courses (led by Brother Henri, S.C.) and Home
Economics are on the agenda. In addition, religious,
sports, cultural, social activities are planned through
“Student Life” whose principal promoter
remains Brother Claude Chénier, S.C.. How does one forget
“Student Life’s” famous slogan? Canado
Higher, Stronger and Farther.
